when use onto

Usage guide for the preposition 'onto': movement to a position on a surface or place, with a minimal contrast against static 'on'.

A closer look

Use onto when something moves to a position on a surface, usually with a movement verb: The cat climbed onto the roof.

If nothing moves, on fits: The cat is on the roof.

Highlighting where someone or something lands? Onto points there: She emptied the suitcase onto the floor.

title:When to use 'onto'

description:A quick guide to when onto fits, and how intent changes the wording.

Which sentence are you writing?

  • Someone steps up in a station? Use onto for movement to a surface: I stepped onto the platform just as the train arrived. The movement onto the raised surface is what the preposition shows.

  • Someone slips off a trail? Ask for movement back to a location: Can you get back onto the path? Here onto points to the place the person returns to, not just a flat surface.

  • Someone describes loading things? The verb carries the movement, and onto carries the destination: The sheep were loaded onto trucks. The trucks are where the animals end up.

  • Contrast case. If nobody moves, on is your word: The sheep were on the trucks states position only. Swap in loaded onto trucks and you are now reporting the act of getting them there, which is exactly what onto is for.

When the sentence is nearly the same either way

You're writing The files are saved onto the disk, and you wonder if on would do. Honestly, it would. When the sentence works either way, look at how much movement you want to highlight.

Onto gives a stronger feeling of the data moving to the disk, so it suits saved onto or put the pictures onto your memory stick when the transfer itself matters.

On just states where things sit, so The files are saved on the disk reads more like a settled result than an action.

Same choice with attaching: say clip the phone onto your belt when you want the reader to feel the act of clipping it there.

Clip the phone on your belt is also natural, but it sounds more like the end state, the phone already resting in place.

So when no fixed rule decides it, ask whether the movement is worth pointing at. If it is, pick onto; if you only care about where something ends up, on is enough.
